Welcome Message from Japan CCS Co., Ltd.

Since our establishment in 2008, under the guidance of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), we have conducted the Tomakomai CCUS Demonstration Project, Japan’s first integrated full-chain CCS project from capture to injection and storage. At the Japan-Asia CCUS Forum 2020 held in October 2020, we introduced to the international community the results of the project which achieved cumulative CO₂ injection of 300,000 tons on November 22, 2019.

The current international community also has even higher expectations for CCUS technology, and we believe that it will become increasingly important to disseminate to the international community information on Japan’s safe CCUS technology obtained through the Tomakomai and other projects in order to accelerate the realization of carbon neutrality through CCUS project development in Asia and around the world.

In this year’s forum, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and ERIA, who lead the “Asia CCUS Network” established in June 2021 as an international industry-academic-government platform aimed at sharing knowledge and improving the business environment for carbon dioxide capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) throughout Asia, as well as Japan’s innovation accelerator NEDO and organizations involved in CCUS projects in Japan and abroad will give presentations on their experience, knowledge, latest technological trends, and future outlook, showcasing Japan’s technological excellence to Asia and the world. In addition, the current status and issues of CCUS projects around the world will be introduced.

Welcome Message from Global CCS Institute

Climate change is an urgent and critical threat to our world. Multiple independent scientific bodies including the IPCC and IEA have stated that carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCS/CCUS) technologies will be vital to achieving our climate targets within the short timeframes necessary.

CCS/CCUS is a versatile suite of technologies capable of delivering deep emissions reductions across power generation and is currently the only economic solution to decarbonizing hard-to-abate industrial sectors including steel and cement manufacturing. Importantly, CCS/CCUS will be key to low-emissions hydrogen which has the potential to drive the development of a new energy economy, creating jobs and supporting communities.

Asia is home to some of the fastest growing, dynamic economies in the world but also comprises many countries with rapidly increasing greenhouse gas inventories. This forum provides an important opportunity to share knowledge regarding and build capacity around CCS/CCUS technologies and discuss its deployment and future across the region.

This year’s Forum will cover the Japanese Government’s CCS/CCUS policy, CCS/CCUS initiatives in Asia, and key R&D results from project developers. Speakers from leading European projects will share their achievements and advice, and speakers from the Asia-Pacific region will discuss the challenges, policies and regulations, and deployment strategies in the regions where the projects are being developed.
