COP25

Japan CCS exhibited at COP25 Japan Pavilion.

The UN Climate Change Conference COP25 was held in Madrid, Spain from December 2 to December 13, 2019. Representatives from 197 countries and regions met to discuss and reach agreements among nations to address the challenges of climate change.

The Japan Pavilion, hosted by the Ministry of the Environment, showcased exhibits by 16 organizations from Japan displaying advanced technologies reflecting Japan’s efforts to achieve a decarbonized society.

The Japan CCS exhibit introduced the Tomakomai CCS Demonstration Project, showing that CCS is receiving attention as a key global warming countermeasure capable of reducing CO₂ on a large scale.

Japan CCS hosted a Carbon dioxide Capture & Storage (CCS) side event at the Japan Pavilion under the theme “~From Japan to the World~ Saving our Beautiful Planet with CCS! Part 2” on December 13, with the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization as co-hosts.

CCS experts from around the world shared their knowledge, experiences and insights towards accelerating the deployment of CCS/CCUS, a key technology to mitigate global warming.

Japan CCS presented at the China Pavilion Side Event.

On December 6, Japan CCS delivered a keynote speech entitled “Tomakomai CCS Demonstration Project – Results and Lessons Learned” at the COP25 China Pavilion Side Event “CCUS: Practices and Prospects”.

The event was hosted by the Department of Climate Change, Ministry of Ecology and Environment, People’s Republic of China, and co-hosted by the Global CCS Institute, Asian Development Bank, China CCUS Professional Committee and Northwest University.

Mr. Yukihiro Kawaguchi, Director of Global Environmental Affairs Office, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan was invited to speak at the panel discussion to share best practices worldwide and conduct in-depth discussion on CCUS with multilateral governments, academia and international organizations.
